Dr Deryck Tan BSc BVMS (Hons) MANZCVS (Equine Dentistry)
Deryck graduated from Murdoch University in 1995 with Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery First Class Honours and has been in Equine Practice since. After graduating he spent 10 years at the Singapore Turf Club, working in an intensive equine veterinary hospital. The hospital had a high workload of lameness examinations, respiratory disease cases, poor performance evaluations, radiography, ultrasonography, scintigraphy and general anaesthetics for arthroscopic surgeries and colic surgeries. He also worked as a regulatory vet at the turf club.
In 2007, Deryck joined the Bullsbrook Veterinary Hospital and became a partner in 2009. He developed a special interest in Veterinary Dentistry and is now a member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists Equine Dentistry Chapter. There is now a busy caseload of veterinary dentistry at the clinic as well as on site. Besides routine veterinary dentistry, Deryck also performs oro-maxillary surgery and head radiology. He is also equipped for dental extractions including complicated cheek teeth extractions. He also continues to work in general equine practice.
Equine dental care has been largely ignored by Equine Veterinarians until now. Deryck is one of a few Equine Dental Veterinarians in WA raising the standard of dental care in horses. Horses rarely show signs of oral pain and will often continue to eat despite severe oro-dental pathology. Cursory examinations often miss these so Deryck examines the mouth in detail utilising dental mirrors and illumination, with the sedated horse in a purpose-built crush. Quite often, oro-dental problems detected early have a higher chance of successful treatment hence the importance of regular Veterinary Dentistry.
Deryck is also an official regulatory veterinarian for Perth Racing. His roles there include pre-race checks, starting gate duties, rescue of injured horses on track, post-race checks, sample collection and expert veterinary advice to stewards.
When not treating horses, Deryck may be seen in the Indian Ocean in his fishing kayak, chasing the big one that got away. That is, unless he is in his studio listening to Tchaikovsky, playing a tune on his fiddle, hand-pollinating one of his fruit trees in his orchard or spending time with his wife Sheryl and two daughters; Sharmaine & Laura.
