Dr Anushka Chaku BSc BVMS MANZCVS (Equine Surgery)
Anushka graduated from Murdoch University in 2005. Straight from university she went into an Equine specific internship at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital. She then went on to work in private practice in Australia and the UK for several years where she found that her passion within veterinary medicine involved evaluating lameness and diagnostic imaging (in particular ultrasound).
Gaining experience in these fields involved several years of further continuing education. In 2010 she passed her membership exams and became a Member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (ANZCVS) in Equine Surgery.
Also at this time, she discovered the International Society on Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP), which is a continuing education organisation providing advanced knowledge in the diagnosis and management of equine lameness and poor performance. Anushka has completed all 8 of these education modules through travel to the USA and several EU countries and is waiting to sit her exam.
In 2011 she undertook another internship at CIRALE in France, with a director & founder of the ISELP, Pr. Jean-Marie Denoix. Pr Denoix is a professor in Anatomy, a specialist in Equine Biomechanics and a world leader in diagnostic ultrasonography of the equine musculoskeletal system. Through her experience at this world class facility and working under the guidance of senior and expert clinicians, Anushka develop advanced skills in detection of poor performance and lameness in sport horses as well as in advanced diagnostic ultrasonography.
The philosophy of the centre is to make early diagnoses of lesions, meaning a targeted management program can be instigated (training and treatment) so as to help prolong the sporting career of performance horses. This is something that has particularly interested Anushka and she has carried through this belief with her work back home.
Anushka is an FEI Veterinary Official in eventing, showjumping and dressage, and regularly takes on this role as well as performing medication control at WA competitions. She has also gained international experience as an FEI veterinarian, shadowing delegates at both Badmington and Pau CCI ****.
As she is fluent in French, Anushka was fortunate to have the opportunity to translate one of Pr Denoix's books: Biomechanics and Physical Training of the Horse. The book provides an in-depth description of equine anatomy and biomechanics and applies these basic concepts to training and exercise so trainers and riders can improve their preparation for competition as well as aid rehabilitation following injury.
Anushka is a mum to 2 babies now, Hendrick and Saskia and consults at the clinic part-time. She loves being a mum and spending time with her husband and 2 dogs, going to the beach or exploring the great outdoors!
